DETAILS:
The flu season is here and the number of patients testing positive for
influenza is on the rise. Many of the cases have been quite serious and even
life threatening. Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in partnership with Immunize
Oregon and the Multnomah County Immunization Program want to remind the public
that flu season lasts for months, not weeks. There is still time to get
vaccinated in order to help protect yourself and your loved ones.
People age 12 and older may also receive a free tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis
vaccination. Pertussis commonly referred to as whooping cough, is very
contagious. County health departments declared pertussis outbreaks in Oregon
and Washington in 2012. Eighty three percent of people who die from pertussis
in the U.S. are less than three months old and often catch it from adult family
members.
