WA Governor Responds to Tsunami Debris

Debris on WA Coast
In March 2011, the large earthquake and resulting tsunami in Japan sent a large amount of debris into the ocean.  Some of the debris is now beginning to wash up along the coast areas of Alaska, Oregon, Washington and California.

Today, Washington Governor Christine Gregoire directed the Washington State Emergency Management Division to lead a coordinated effort to address tsunami debris that is washing up on the Washington coastline.

The full text of the Governor's direction can be found at this link:  http://www.governor.wa.gov/news/news-view.asp?pressRelease=1917&newsType=1

What Can You Do?
If you find debris on beaches that may be hazardous or contain oil, they should call 1-800-OILS-911.  Reports of debris may also be emailed to disasterdebris@noaa.gov as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration agency is collecting information about debris found along our coastline.
