Tsunami Advisories & Warnings

We have all been sobered by the large 8.9 magnitude arthquake that rocked Japan last night.  With amazing footage of the tsunami waves that raced across that country, many are wondering this morning what this might translate to here in the Pacific Northwest.

A Tsunami Warning has been issued for the Oregon Coast.  Evacuations are currently underway and waves are expected to begin in the 7:00 a.m. hour.  The anticipated wave heights may be found online at www.weather.gov/portland.  A Tsunami Warning is the highest level of tsunami alert.

A Tsunami Advisory has been issued for the Washington Coast.  This is the 3rd highest level of Tsunami alert.

Clark County is NOT currently under a Tsunami Advisory or Warning at this time.

The Oregon Department of Transportation is asking people NOT to travel west on OR-126 WEST towards Florence and Eugene in an effort to keep traffic flowing smoothly.

While Clark County sits along the Columbia River, the National Weather Service has only issued the following information for Cowlitz County early this morning:

LOWER COLUMBIA-I-5 CORRIDOR IN COWLITZ COUNTY-
INCLUDING THE CITIES OF...ST. HELENS...CLATSKANIE...LONGVIEW...
KELSO...CASTLE ROCK
603 AM PST FRI MAR 11 2011

HYDROLOGIC RIVER MODELS INDICATE THAT IF A TSUNAMI WAVE ENTERS THE MOUTH OF THE COLUMBIA RIVER THERE MAY BE A SMALL INCREASE IN WATER LEVEL AND WAVE ENERGY THAT COULD TRAVEL UP THE COLUMBIA RIVER LATER TODAY. THE INCREASE IN WAVE ENERGY MAY CAUSE SOME DISRUPTIONS TO FLOATING HOMES AND/OR COMMERCIAL SHIPPING MOORED IN HARBORS.

PLEASE STAY TUNED TO NOAA WEATHER RADIO OR YOUR LOCAL MEDIA SOURCE FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.

Google has activated the Japan Person Finder to locate missing people during this event.  To access the Google Person Finder, go to http://japan.person-finder.appspot.com/query?lang=en&role=seek
