Register Today for CRESA's Summer Book Club

The Clark Regional Emergency Services Agency (CRESA) will be hosting a lunchtime Book Club for the Amanda Ripley book, The Unthinkable, which will begin on Monday, July 12, 2010.

This book provides phenomenal examples of how people have responded to disasters as individuals. We anticipate that the topics will generate some very thought-provoking discussion which will challenge the way that people think and prepare for the "Unthinkable."

The Unthinkable Book Club will be facilitated by Cheryl Bledsoe and Beth Vaughn, who are both emergency managers for CRESA and Clark County. The club will run for 8 Mondays over the lunch hour from 12p-1p from July 12th-August 30th. It will be held on the 6th Floor of the Public Services Center on 1300 Franklin Street, Vancouver, WA.
People should register for the Unthinkable Book Club online by July 1st at http://www.cresa911.org/emergency/training-register.php or via phone at 360-992-6270.

Registration will be limited to 25 people to ensure good discussion.
New and used copies of the book are available for purchase online from a number of retailers like Amazon, Borders and Barnes and Noble for between $8-14. Participants will be expected to bring their own copy of the book.

People may also participate in the book club discussion off-site, virtually through Twitter by following www.twitter.com/CRESA_Presents. This Twitter identity will be used during the Book Club to facilitate discussion with people outside the room regarding the various chapters.

People participating face-to-face do not need to understand Twitter at all for this to be a valuable experience in-person.

Discussion questions for Chapter 1 will be distributed to registrants on July 2nd via email to on-site participants and will be posted on the Twitter account for our virtual participants.
On-site participants are encouraged to bring their own lunch as no food/beverage will be provided.

Unusually Wet Storm Predicted

According to the National Weather Service, a Special Weather Statement has been issued for Northwest Oregon and Southwest Washington as of 11:18 a.m. today (Tuesday, June 1st) which provides the following information:

There is a strong storm system that will move into northwest Oregon and southwest Washington late this evening and Wednesday (Jun 1-2), that will produce very heavy rainfall during the next 36 hours.

This storm has tapped into some sub-tropical moisture and has some characteristics of a strong winter storm that may cause localized rural and urban street flooding and sharp rises on smaller creeks, rivers and streams. Strong winds (gusts to 50 mph on Coast and 25-35 mph in valleys) are also possible with this storm.

We want to bring attention to this storm for several reasons listed below:

(1) Unusual storm for springtime (winter-like characteristics).
(2) Heavy rainfall potential (2 to 5 inches in coast/coast range/cascades, 1 to 1.5 inches valleys).
(3) The ground is saturated from recent rains.
(4) Reservoir systems are full.
(5) Rivers, creeks and streams already running higher than normal.

Please be advised of this information and remember NOT to drive through high water if you encounter any localized flooding.
